Upgrade your credit card and credit score

Upgrading your credit card doesn’t always yield benefits, make sure to compare upgrade offers and upgrade only when it’s beneficial for you. Also upgrade credit card with a promotional period of at least 6 months to a year.

When comparing upgrade offers, make sure to compare upgrade fee, credit bureau factor and monthly repayment of the upgrade offer. If you don’t upgrade your current credit card, keep your old account open as it will help improve your credit score within time.

Are you thinking about upgrading your credit card? There are tons of upgrade offers in the market, but not all upgrade offers will be good for you. Here is a guide on what to look out and how to upgrade your credit card:

1. Compare transfer fee: Some upgrade offers don’t charge any fee for transferring your balance from the old credit card to upgrade credit card. However, some upgrade offers charge a 3%-5% transfer fee. You need to consider if the upgrade offer is worth it or not.

2. Credit Bureau: Checking your credit report and applying for upgrade credit card will affect your credit score as well as checking account and applying for other financial products such as home loans and car loans. When upgrade a credit card, compare the upgrade offer with your current credit history. Some upgrade offers require you to have no or less loan payment within 6 months compared to your other financial products such as home and auto loans. In this case, upgrade should not affect your score if you don’t take any new loan in the next 6 months.

3. Income Requirement: Upgrade credit cards usually require higher income than regular credit cards. If you upgrade to a new card with high upgrade fee, make sure your salary can cover the upgrade fees and monthly repayment for the upgrade offer.

Since most upgrade offers are promotional within 6 months or 1 year, upgrade is not really necessary if your upgrade credit card comes with a high upgrade fee and not beneficial for you. There is nothing wrong in keeping your old credit card and wait until the promotional period to upgrade again.
